SUMMER 2018
Since 2013, the Mālama ‘Āina Field School at Nānākuli has been recognized as a stimulating summer school course held for students entering grades 7-10 at Nānākuli High & Intermediate School (NHIS) and Ka Waihona o ka Na‘auao Public Charter School. The primary goal of the program is to strengthen students’ core skills in science, math, English, and language arts by connecting them to their ‘āina and culture as well as increase school preparedness, on-time graduation, and enrollment in college, all contributing to an ‘auwai (education pathway) that leads to meaningful career opportunities. In doing so, the program engages students in learning so that they will be successful learners and contributors to their community and will begin to understand the role of the 21st century konohiki (Hawaiian land manager). The Field School curriculum utilizes the integration of in-class and outdoor learning experiences, which connects the content that students learn in the classroom to real world experiences within their community in an effort to promote critical thinking, problem-solving, teamwork, good learning habits, and an appreciation and respect for the land, sea, and cultural richness of the Wai‘anae moku. Upon successful completion of the course requirements, students can earn up to one recovery credit or elective credit (type of credit differs between NHIS & Wai'anae High School).
This summer (2018), thanks to a generous grant from Kamehameha Schools, the Mālama 'Āina Field School will expand to Wai'anae High School! We will have a total of two classes, one class at NHIS and one class at Wai'anae High School. Students currently in grades 7, 8, 9 at NHIS, Ka Waihona o ka Na'auao PCS, Wai'anae Intermediate, and Wai'anae High School are eligible to apply. Students from Nanakuli High & Intermediate School (NHIS) and Ka Waihona o ka Na'auao PCS will be based at NHIS and students from Wai'anae Intermediate School and Wai'anae High School will be based at Wai'anae High school this summer.
