On July 5, 2016, we went to Mokauea Island, which is located across Mauli Ola commonly known as Sand Island. We experienced seeing sea animals that have no backbone (invertebrates) and saw the last remaining fishpond on this island. We also took water samples from the ocean and learned the history of Mokauea. We met Kehaulani Kupihea and Aunty Joanie. Kehau Kupihea is an anthropologist and she studies and teaches different people about Mokauea. Aunty Joanie and her husband are caretakers and lessees of Mokauea. One of the highlights I had on this field trip to Mokauea was being able to learn about the island and the different fishponds that were there before.
