On July 12, 2016, my classmates from Malama 'Aina Field School and I visited Leeward Community College (LCC) and UH West O'ahu. For LCC, faculty and staff are committed to helping you and will give you a lot of support to get into college for free and to get a job. They offer many scholarships that will help you pay for college. You can even get paid to go to college. If you have a really busy schedule, you don't need to go to school daily and your college schedule can work around your schedule. This will allow you to have a flexible schedule for college. Later that day, we took a tour around LCC and found out the many different classes such as hula, culture, astronomy, different languages, PE, design, and many more. Leeward is a very supporting and welcoming environment and Aunty Lily is one of the people to make that happen. Aunty Lily is one of the counselors you can talk to there. Her job is to "make sure every person that walks through the door will succeed." After LCC, we had the opportunity to visit UH West O'ahu and spend some time with the one and only Manulani Meyer and Tasia Yamamura in the hale. They spoke to us about food security and the amazing organic garden that students can work in and take home yummy fruits and vegetables.
